Have you ever deleted a file by mistake, or lost documents because your USB drive got damaged? Recuva can retrieve lost files, and you can even search for files by their contents.

Recover deleted files

So you've accidentally deleted an important document – you emptied your recycle bin and then spent a frantic 5 minutes trying to undelete your file! Your important document is gone for good…or is it?

Deleted files are only permanently lost when the space they occupy on the disk gets written over with new data – so your document could still be sitting there, waiting to get written over.

The good news is you can use Recuva to restore your deleted file. But wait – you don't remember what the file was called or much about it except some of the words in the document. No problem, in Recuva you can search for your file using the words you remember from it.

Search for content in a lost file

  1. Open Recuva. (Recuva usually starts with a wizard taking you through the steps of recovering files, but we don't need it this time. Click 'Cancel' and exit the wizard.)
  2. Open the dropdown menu next to the 'Scan' button. You get two options: 'Scan files' and 'Scan contents' – select 'Scan contents'.
  3. A window pops up – type in the content you want to search for. Enter your text next to where it says 'Search string'.
  4. You can restrict the search to a particular type of file by selecting from the 'File mask' dropdown menu. Select '.doc' or '.docx' to search only for Word documents, or '*.*' to search for all file types.
  5. Click 'Scan'.

Recuva will now go through your deleted files searching for the words you entered, and let you restore the files it finds.
