Top CCleaner tools you should be using regularly

CCleaner makes getting the best out of your computer easy but when life is busy, PC maintenance can fall to the bottom of the to-do list. However, if you can tune-up on a regular basis, you'll be much happier with your computer's performance.

But how often should you use CCleaner and with limited time, what are the top tools you should turn to?

This blog delivers some tips and tricks to ensure that you get the best out of your PC in the quickest time possible.

1. Get rid of built-up junk

Cleaning your computer deletes the unnecessary files, data and settings collected during its day-to-day use. A default ('out-of-the-box') clean using CCleaner will give your PC the best clean without deleting anything you might need. To get the best out of your PC, we recommend that you clean it once a week.

To do this, simply:

  • Open CCleaner (download here if you don’t already have it)
  • Follow the step-by-step process to Health Check your PC
As well as cleaning your PC, Health Check will update software and amend your startup items in one go - watch the video here
(Not got Health Check? Get it in the latest version of CCleaner)

Or, if you only want to clean your PC...
  • Click on ‘Custom Clean’
  • Then click ‘Analyze’ to see details of the junk files that CCleaner can safely delete and then ‘Run Cleaner’

If you’ve not cleaned your PC in a while, your initial clean will take longer than any subsequent cleans. For the average PC user, a weekly clean should only take a few seconds.

Note: CCleaner has already saved you lots of time! In independent tests, cleaning using CCleaner was shown to be 20 times faster than an experienced IT engineer carrying out the same clean manually.

2. Uninstall unwanted apps

Even in a short space of time devices can become cluttered with apps and installed programs that were once useful but you no longer use, or were even pre-loaded onto your computer before you bought it. CCleaner determines the impact of individual apps on your PC and can uninstall them for you (it can even remove the default Windows 10 apps you can’t get rid of).

To do this:

  • Go to ‘Tools’ > ‘Uninstall’
  • Scan the list of programs
  • Click on those you wish to remove and click ‘Uninstall’

It’s that easy!

3. Review your startup items

When you install a program it can sometimes set itself to run every time you start Windows, but not every program has to start automatically. In fact, lots of startup programs will prevent your computer from starting quickly. You can either amend startup items using CCleaner’s ‘Startup’ tool, or as part of your PC’s Health Check (as described above).

Here’s how you can use CCleaner’s Startup tool to manage your startup items for a quick and effective boost to your computer’s boot time:

  • Go to ‘Tools’ > ‘Startup’
  • Scan the list of programs
  • If you spot one you don’t want to start automatically, click on it and then click ‘Disable’

A word of caution!

In general, most apps that you only run sometimes do not need to run at startup, and can be disabled. However, disabling something your computer needs can cause problems, so you should only disable something if you know what it does. If you’re not sure what a program is, we recommend you Google its name prior to disabling it, as it may be required for your computer to function normally.

Your five minutes are up. We hope that helps!

Please note that this post is for CCleaner for PC. If you're not a PC user but want to optimize your device, CCleaner for Mac and CCleaner for Android are also available.
