How to block Google ads in minutes

Ever heard of Google? Well unless you've been offline since 1997, it's likely you're one of the nearly 4 billion people that have used Google at some stage, the world's most popular search engine. That's pretty impressive considering there are only 4.39 billion active internet users in the world!

For the past ten years, Google has dominated the search engine market, boasting an impressive 92% of market share as of 2021. The facts on Google are absolutely staggering (just Google it!) and there is no shortage of Google apps and software available that have captivated us over the years.

Google is owned by its parent company, Alphabet, and offers an ever-expanding suite of tools to make our daily lives easier, from Gmail with over 1.3 billion active users to Google Photos with 1 billion active users. On top of this, who can resist watching funny cat videos on YouTube or music clips, etc? Apparently, 2 billion of us.

How does Google make money?

There's one thing that you may have been wondering since a huge majority of the Google products are available for free, and that is how does Google make any money? Well, If you're reading this on Google Chrome, then you're likely seeing ads too. The majority of Google's revenue is generated through advertising, and in present day 2021, there are over 2.9 million companies using Google's marketing services.

Over the years they have refined the way that we view ads on Google, and in 2012 they released the "Top Heavy" update, targeting websites with too many ads above the fold (in the top half of a web page). They did a similar update in 2017 with the "Fred" update, targeting low-quality search results that aim to only generate ad revenue.

Targeted ad placements "just for you"

Nowadays, you'll also see paid ad placement that is discreetly located in multiple locations in Google apps, especially their top ranking search engine, Google Chrome. The first and most obvious is banner ads that are placed to the left or right of your chosen website. Then there are pop-up ads that will appear in the foreground, and occasionally, you'll also get autoplay audio and video ads that will appear too.

Additionally, you'll see paid ads that feature at the top of your search results and are specific to the type of information you're searching for, offering a product or service. These ads will be chosen based on analytics of your search history and will be catered and "personalized" to your interests (using your digital identity to guide them). This comes from information that Google has stored and at times shared with advertisers, analytics companies, and interested third parties. This is to make your online experience better and more relevant but this does put your online privacy at risk.

If you are serious about online security and protecting your online identity, there's a quick and easy way to get your privacy back while surfing the net, and block as many ads as you want.
