Computer startup slow

There are many factors that can make your computer startup slow; it could be an old device or even have an overloaded or fragmented hard disk. Here are a few ways you can speed up startup and boost system speed.

1. Disable background programs

Programs running in the background can make your computer startup slow. If you’ve set certain apps to automatically run each time you start your computer, this could well be the cause behind your PC’s slow startup. Disabling unwanted startup programs is a good way to help your computer shed some unnecessary digital deadweight, thereby improving its performance.

2. Delete temporary files

Temporary files are created by computer programs and your operating system for backup purposes or even when installing updates. These, however, can pile up over time, potentially causing your PC’s slow startup. Finding and removing these files can free up space on the disk. More free space means you’ll also likely see an improvement in your PC’s startup speed and overall performance.

3. Update Windows

If you’ve tried 1 and 2 but you’re still stuck thinking “why is my computer startup slow?”, how up to date is your current software? You'll probably find that updating to the latest version of Windows will give you the best chance of making sure your computer doesn't start slowly.

4. Check for processor overheating

If your processor is overheating, this can contribute to your PC’s slow startup. You can fix this by cleaning out any dust or dirt that could be clogging your computer’s cooling fan. Some people don’t know this, but your computer processor needs proper airflow to function correctly. If you have a laptop, you could even think about buying a cooling pad.

5. Check for a fragmented hard drive

If your computer gets a lot of use or is just getting older, it may start dividing parts of programs and other files into small pockets of free space spread across your hard drive. This is especially the case if your hard disk is becoming too full. These fragmented files quite literally take longer for your computer to piece together, resulting in longer loading times. This can make your computer startup slow too. To fix a fragmented hard drive and for increased computer speed, why not check out our Defraggler app?

For a user-friendly, in-depth look into your computer’s temporary files, startup programs and more, you can also download our award-winning CCleaner app. It can help fix these issues while, in turn, speeding up your PC’s slow startup in the process.
