Why updating your system and all of your software is a good idea

If your PC has a hardware issue it could very well be a system or driver problem. It could be that your mouse or sound has stopped working or any other built-in or plug-in device. Either way, we're here to help.

Regularly updating your system, software, and drivers is something you need to do if you want your computer running at its best. There's nothing more frustrating than when something appears to just stop working for no reason. One day you're happily listening to your favorite album on your Bluetooth speakers, the next day your computer tells you it can't find that device. How is that possible?! It doesn't seem fair. It's also worth noting that outdated software is a security risk and updating software should close any security flaws.

Luckily, with technology, there is usually a reason devices stop working and you can often fix the issue yourself at home. That's probably why you're here. If one of your devices that's connected to your computer has stopped working, you need to check for driver updates you're missing now. If you haven't updated the apps on your PC for a while, you should do that too.

You should get the most recent drivers when you update Windows 10. However, manufacturers of your peripheral devices (e.g. mouse or speakers) may release new versions in between Windows releases, and some just won't get picked up in every Windows update. Other times, a device may stop working as a result of a system update.

For that reason, we're going to give you a few options and walk you through each process:

  • Perform a system update - hopefully, this catches some driver updates
  • Perform a manual Windows driver update - see if Windows can find the latest drivers for you
  • Use an automated driver updater - this is by far the quickest and easiest method. Driver updates can be tricky if you're not very technical, so it's also the safest, providing you use a tool which can roll back changes if needed.

How to perform a system update

Windows 10 will run automatic checks to make sure you are on the latest version (as long as you have automatic updating selected). There are times when you may want to check you are running the current Windows 10 or push forward a new update before your automatic scheduling kicks in.

To manually perform a Windows 10 update, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your Windows start button and find "Settings"
  2. Choose "Update & Security"
  3. Go to "Windows Update" and click on "Check for updates" which will scan for any updates and start automatically (if there is one available)

How to update drivers Windows 10 manually

If you are already using the latest Windows 10 version then you can look for and install a new driver that is specific to one device:

  1. Go to the taskbar and enter "Device Manager" in the search box
  2. Select "Device Manager"
  3. Click on the category (e.g. Bluetooth) you are interested in updating then right-click the device you want to update
  4. Choose "Update Driver", then "Search automatically for updated driver software"

If Windows doesn't find a new driver you can look for one on the company's website that manufactured your device. At this point, consider that you may have many outdated drivers on your machine and it may be quicker and easier to use a tool to find and apply driver updates at once, for you

Let's look at a specific example for updating your graphics card on a Windows 10 machine.

How to update graphics driver Windows 10

This is a common driver that people need to update because it's so important. A graphics card isn't just relevant for people working in design, video editors, or gamers, as it may sound. It is your graphics processing unit (GPU).

A GPU is central to all computer graphics and helps to improve the quality of images and videos. It can also enhance video performance and make sure images are displayed correctly. It's responsible for the output of the images and videos that you see on your screen or display monitor. This includes everything from YouTube videos to Facebook photos. You can see how this could cause some issues if not updated correctly!

You can manually update this on a Windows 10 system by following these steps:

  1. Go to the taskbar and enter "Device Manager" in the search box
  2. Select "Device Manager"
  3. Click on the "Display Adaptors" category and find your GPU
  4. Right-click on your GPU, then choose "Properties"
  5. Click on the "Driver" tab and make a note of the model and version number of your GPU
  6. Now you want to compare the model and version against the manufacturer's most current driver
  7. If you're running an older version, download and install the latest version, following the instructions on the manufacturer's page

These are essentially the same steps you would follow for manually updating any of your drivers. You would just have to go back into the "Device Manager" each time and choose a different category and device to search for any available updates and/or compare these to the manufacturer's website.

As we promised, now we'll show you the quick and easy way to get this done.

Use an automated driver updater

We created CCleaner's Driver Updater to locate and update all of your device drivers at once. It will scan your PC for out-of-date drivers and can identify more than 8 million of them! You will then see all of your driver software conveniently in one place and can update them with a click of a button. This means if your drivers are not the latest versions for your keyboard, monitor, and GPU, CCleaner would get the latest files from the manufacturers and update them for you then and there. This would save you a lot of time and hassle going to each of the manufacturer's websites and searching for the latest driver versions and following different instructions on how to download and install them.

Best of all, CCleaner Driver Updater now comes as part of the award-winning CCleaner Professional PC cleaning and optimization tool, which has so many other features already built-in. As well as updating your drivers, you'll be able to clean your PC to create some free space and boost your online safety, and optimize your computer so it runs faster and smoother.

You can try all of these features as part of our CCleaner Professional free trial. There is no need to enter your card details so it's completely risk-free. We think you'll be surprised at how many drivers need updating and just how much space can be cleared in minutes!
